An Epidural

An Epidural
Repost @thefitmidwife
Did you have an epidural? ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣Epidurals vs natural labour.... it’s the great mum forum debate and good god do people have opinions on it. On both sides of the spectrum. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
The only thing that matters is that women in labour feel empowered and confident in the information they have to choose what is best for them. ⁣⁣⁣⁣Not what is best for their husbands, mother-in-law or their ‘family friend who is a doctor’. Not your uterus, not your choice! ⁣
Living in the UAE I can say (without statistics as we have none) that the epidural rate here is high. But so what 🤷🏼‍♀️
Do I believe in active birth and minimal interventions... Yes. To my very core. ⁣⁣⁣But I also believe choice has to be at the centre of our birth culture. It is my role to educate and support. Not judge. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Women who choose epidurals are not weak, taking the easy way out or working any less hard than women who do not choose one. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
Truth be told, there is almost more pressure to birth ‘naturally’ now and it can set women up for feelings of failure, guilt and disappointment. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
So I’m just here to remind everyone that we should never judge mothers on their choices and trust them to do what is needed for them to achieve the birth they want. ⁣⁣⁣⁣Do whatever works for you! ⁣
